Get Inspired: Giving Rocks

Help and Heal. Everyone has the power to make a difference in our community - no matter how young! Today, we're inviting your family to make your voices heard. Check out the video about Giving Rocks Foundation and learn about how, at age 10, Syd Martin used her voice and the help of her community to start a business to support medical research.

In the video, Syd says, "My small 10 year-old voice was a lot louder and more heard than I had imagined it was." Syd's story teaches us that all of our voices matter. We can all make a difference in our communities.

This film was produced by Small Forces, a creative impact studio here in Chicago dedicated to amplifying the work of purpose-driven organizations through cinematic storytelling. We love their inspiring work!

Let’s Talk

After watching the video about Giving Rocks, use the questions below to kick-start a great conversation with your family:

  • How does Syd take her negative experience and change it into a positive experience? What did you find interesting about Syd’s story?

  • How does Syd make her voice heard? Why is this important?

  • What makes you feel better when you are not feeling well? How can you support others when they are experiencing an illness?

  • Bonus! What issues do you care about? Think about ways you can make your voice heard.

Do Something: Support Pediatric Patients

Kids helping kids. Chicago is home to many world-class pediatric hospitals. Dream up your own fundraiser to support kids who are receiving medical treatment.

Get inspired by the work of organizations like Giving Rocks or Alex's Lemonade Stand - both started by kids who mobilized to support causes that impacted them directly.

Need a fun place to start? Try donating your birthday to a cause you care about, hosting a bake sale, or offering to do tasks for friends and neighbors for a donation. Donate the money you raise to medical research, a hospital, or a person receiving treatment who you care about!

Community Connections: Thank Healthcare Workers

Healthcare workers are on the frontlines every day. Thousands of healthcare workers across the city are dedicated to healing our community. Their care, patience, and expertise support our communities, neighbors, and loved ones through challenging times.

Let's keep the thanks coming! Take some time to reflect on your gratitude for healthcare workers. Write letters and notes to the healthcare workers at Lurie Children's Hospital to show your thanks. What can you write to bring some positivity to a nurse or doctor’s day? Showing community support helps to bring a smile to a medical professional’s face - even after a difficult day.

Please review Lurie Children's Hospital's letter writing guidelines before participating. They have specific requirements in place for donations to keep patients and staff safe.

Once you've written your cards, you can seal them in a Ziploc baggie. Be sure to indicate that you're participating through The Honeycomb Project on the envelope or somewhere inside the package. Letters and notes can be mailed to:
