Get Inspired: Environmental Education Camp

A Home is a Human Right. The Chicago Coalition for the Homeless reports that over 16,000 Chicago Public Schools students experienced housing insecurity in the 2018-2019 school year. Today, we invite your family to think about how stable housing can help to transform communities. Click the photo above to listen to Vin Shambry’s story about his experience with homelessness growing up and how going to Outdoor School helped him feel like a kid again.

When Vin was in 6th grade, a week-long overnight school trip at a camp in the woods provided the chance to have fun and also reflect on his and his family's experiences of struggling with homelessness.

Homes provide people with a comfort and stability that support them in many ways beyond the basics of shelter. Communities can transform when everyone has access to a home and to the feelings of safety, acceptance, and stability that homes foster.

Let’s Talk

After listening to Vin Shambry's story, use the questions below to kick-start a great conversation with your family:

  • What stood out to you about Vin's story from Outdoor School? What aspects of the story could you relate to?

  • Has there every been a time where you felt uncomfortable or out of place? What or who made you feel more welcomed in that space?

  • Why is your home important to you? What do you enjoy most about your home?

  • Bonus! Have fun with your friends! Set up a virtual hang or meet up. Remember that during stressful times, connecting with others is an important part of self care.
