Get Inspired: Theaster Gates

Activism Art. Art has the power to transform communities. We're inviting your family to think about how creativity and innovation can drive change in our city. Check out this video on the work of Theaster Gates, a Chicago-based artist working to enrich his community on the South Side.

Theaster creates spaces where connections can be built between neighbors. By addressing issues of disinvestment through art, Theaster is fostering a community where people can work, collaborate, and make positive change in their neighborhood.

Let’s Talk

After watching Theaster Gates’ TED Talk, use the questions below to kick-start a great conversation with your family today:

  • What new ideas did you learn from Theaster Gates’ work?

  • How is Theaster using art and culture to transform communities? What do you think about his approach to creating community gathering spaces?

  • Have you ever felt supported by your community? How did it make you feel?

  • Bonus! Do you know your neighbors? On your walk today, ring some doorbells! Take time to introduce yourself and check-in with people on your block. You can also leave small messages of neighborly kindness or joyful drawfuls in your neighbors’ mailboxes.

Do Something: Create Your Community

Gather your art supplies. Inspired by the work of Theaster Gates, we're challenging you to reimagine your neighborhood. Grab abstract objects from around your house to map out what your dream community looks like in a 3D model.

What spaces make up a community? Think about the places that support your community and add creative spaces of your own! Where do people gather? Where do they have fun? Where do people eat? Where do they share resources? Your ability to get creative reimagining community can spark change in your own neighborhood.

Post a picture of your creative community and tag us at #honeycombathome and @honeycombproject to share with the hive.
