Get Inspired: Chicago’s Own Hiplet Dancers
Movement is for everyone. Dance is an artistic expression of the body. Homer Bryant, creative director of the Chicago Multicultural Dance Center, developed a new style of dance he coined "hiplet" as a blend of hip hop and ballet. His hiplet dance troupe has gained a lot of buzz in the dance world after being featured on America's Got Talent. This refreshing new style of dance is revered as "multicultural, accepting, and genuine".
Let’s Talk:
After watching , A Great Big Story’s highlight of the Hiplet dancers, use the questions below to kick-start a great conversation with your family today:
How is hiplet different than ballet?
Can you think of a dance performance or style that inspires you? What makes it special?
What's your favorite way to express yourself through movement? Can you do it now?
Do Something: Create your own Dance
Get creative with movement! Think of some different dance styles (tap, tango, samba, jazz, Irish, swing, etc.) If you could create your own fusion of two styles, which two would you choose? What would you call your new style of dance?
Try and choreograph a one minute routine to share with your family to teach them your new style.
You can also create your own signature dance move to share with friends and inspire!
