Get Inspired: Women Taking on the World of Mariachi

Celebrate Heritage. September 15th to October 15th marks Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the histories, culture, and accomplishments of Hispanic and Latin Americans. We're inviting your family to learn about Hispanic Heritage Month by learning about a different culture or celebrating your own! Check out this video about an all women mariachi band and how they honor their Mexican heritage in a new but traditional way.

Music is linked to our cultural identity. Mariachi Flor de Toloache is New York City's first all women mariachi band. Fueled by a love for their culture, these bandmates upended convention by creating an empowering space for women in mariachi. By reclaiming space in tradition, Mariachi Flor de Toloache continue to preserve and celebrate their cultural heritage.

Let’s Talk

After watching the video about the all women mariachi band, use the questions below to kick-start a great conversation with your family:

  • What stood out to you about the story of Mariachi Flor de Toloache?

  • How did these bandmates challenge conventional mariachi culture? Why was that important to them?

  • Mireya Ramos notes that mariachi is "one of the most passionate musics" she's ever heard. What music makes you feel passionate or empowered? Why?

  • Bonus! Music appears in every culture. Are you familiar with the music that is tied to your ethnic background? Explore the sounds of your roots.

Do Something: Shop Local Panaderias

Support local businesses! Did you know that the Latino business community draws in $15 billion to the Illinois economy every year? Small businesses in these communities are particularly impacted by the pandemic.

We're challenging your family to support local businesses and enjoy some sweet treats from Little Village and Pilsen's finest. Conchas, pan dulce, and so much more! Whether you've been frequenting your neighborhood panaderias for years, or you're a first time shopper, listen to this story on WBEZ to learn more about Chicago's Jewish-Mexican bakery and enjoy a sweet treat with your family.

Community Connections: La Casa Norte

Support families in need. Hispanic and Latino communities are facing disproportionate impacts of the pandemic, impacting jobs, health, and housing stability. La Casa Norte provides housing and support services to youth and families experiencing housing insecurity, while focusing on addressing how housing insecurity disproportionately effects the Latino community.

La Casa Norte appreciates donations of goods such as hygiene supplies, food, and cookware to help support their clients. Consider running a collection drive with your family to assist! Email volunteer@lacasanorte.org to coordinate your drive.

If you're out shopping for your own family, consider picking up some extra items to donate to La Casa Norte!
