Get Inspired: I Am Abel Foundation

Healing with hope. Diverse representation in the medical field is a vital part of ensuring patients’ voices are heard and youth have the inspiration to follow their dreams. Today, we're asking your family to reflect on all that medical professionals do to keep our communities safe and healthy. Check out this video about the I Am Abel Foundation and the work they are doing to help Chicago students follow their passion for careers in medicine.

Medical professionals are keeping our communities safe and connected in more ways than one. While they are hard at work, it's important for us to support them and the people they serve as a community.

Let’s Talk

After watching the video about the I Am Abel Foundation, use the questions below to kick-start a great conversation with your family:

  • What stood out to you about the work and message of Dr. LaMenta “Sweetie” Conway and I Am Abel?

  • Do you think it is important to have diverse representation in the medical field? Why?

  • What makes you feel better when you feel sick? Have others helped you? How?

  • Bonus! Thank a healthcare worker in your life today! Send them a text, a sweet note, or leave a voicemail!

Do Something: Celebrate You!

If you're looking for a sign, this is it. Taking care of others starts with taking care of YOU! Today, we invite you to take some time to check in with yourselves.

What does your mind need to be happy and healthy? What does your body need? Make a list of 3 things you can do today to take care of you.

No self-care practice is too big or too small. Give yourself a hug, snuggle up with your favorite book, or take a bubble bath. Breathe. Whatever self-care looks like to you is the right thing to do today.

Community Connections: Chicago Methodist Senior Services

Support healthcare workers! Our partners at Chicago Methodist Senior Services need your help in supporting their dedicated staff of healthcare workers and medical professionals. CMSS has set up Self-Care Stations at their two senior care buildings to support their employees who provide memory care and nursing care to their residents.

Show healthcare workers your gratitude and care. CMSS is accepting donations of pre-packaged food and treats like candy, mints, and oranges; decorated cards or stones painted with words of encouragement; and new self-care items like essential oil rollers, body scrubs, and lotion. Your family can donate these items as is, or pack special goodie bags for the staff.

If you're out shopping for your own family, consider picking up some extra items to donate to CMSS! Please email Ann Brennan at ann.brennan@cmsschicago.org to schedule a donation drop-off.
