Get Inspired: A Bratz Life

Finding comfort in the little things. For children experiencing homelessness, having toys and other comfort items can bring joy, solace, and even a sense of normalcy and stability during challenging times. Talaya Moore and her mother lived in a shelter for two years, and during this time, Talaya started to collect Bratz dolls.

Click the photo above to listen to Talaya’s story about how the dolls became more than just toys and helped her feel at home while in temporary housing.

This podcast was produced by The Moth, an organization that promotes the art and craft of storytelling and is dedicated to honoring and celebrating the diversity and commonality of human experience.

Let’s Talk

After listening to Talaya’s story, use the questions below to kick-start a great conversation with your family:

  • What stood out to you about Talaya's story? What parts of the story can you relate to?

  • Where do you feel most at home? Why is your home important to you?

  • Think of a time when you faced a difficult challenge. Who was there to support you along the way - family, friends, your religious community, your teacher?

  • Bonus! Reach out to someone and let them know you support them. Sometimes, a reminder that someone has our back can help to inspire us on our journeys.

Do Something: A New Life for Toys

Let's tackle the toy chest. While experiencing homelessness, many kids and families leave the comforts of home behind. Books and toys can provide opportunities for comfort, play, and creativity to kids who are staying at shelters.

Today, we invite your family to sort through your toy chest. What books and toys have you grown out of? What items could another kid love? Organize, listen to music, and have fun. Get the whole family involved!

Make a box of books and toys you're ready to donate. Organizations like Share Our Spare and La Casa Norte will accept your gently used and new donations. Please check each organization’s website for wishlists and details about how to drop-off your donations.
