Get Inspired: Support Students Experiencing Homelessness

Let's take care of each other. Accessing resources for online learning can be especially difficult for families experiencing homelessness. We're inviting your family to think about what home means to you, and how it impacts your ability to learn and work. Watch this video about Allia, a 10 year-old from New York City, and learn about how she experiences remote learning while living at a family shelter.

Home looks different for everyone. For youth and families experiencing homelessness, working and learning from home poses difficult obstacles to getting critical resources like internet and school supplies. As a community, we can support youth and families experiencing homelessness as we adapt to new forms of learning together.

Let’s Talk

After watching Allia's video, use the questions below to kick-start a great conversation with your family:

  • What stood out to you about Allia's story? What aspects of the story could you relate to?

  • Why is your home important to you? What space makes you feel most at home?

  • If you got the chance to ask Allia one question, what would it be?

  • Bonus! We can all use a little extra love and support! Take some time today to show appreciation for a family member. Write a note, send a text, or make a call to someone you love that supports you!

Do Something: Support Youth in Local Shelters

Support Chicago families. Create an activity book for kids and families staying at the La Posada family shelter.

Gather plain white paper, pencils, erasers, and a black marker to get started. Use word searches, mazes, and coloring pages to inspire your designs. Start out with a pencil and once you've finalized your design, trace over it with a black marker to make it pop.

Remember that the kids at La Posada will be coloring in the designs you create and working through the puzzles you design. Leave your pages in black and white so kids can get creative!

Our partners at Casa Central support families at the La Posada interim housing site while they look for stable homes. Families are looking for fun ways to get creative and stay busy.

Email your completed coloring pages, mazes or word searches to Honeycomb. We will compile your pages to make an activity book for the families at Casa Central to enjoy!
