Get Inspired: Feeding America

Nourish Neighbors. During these hard times, a record number of Chicagoans are living in poverty and struggling to pay for basic necessities like food, clothing, and housing. We're inviting your family to think about how we can support our communities through food. Check out this video created by Feeding America about Mikel, a veteran and father experiencing food insecurity.

Feeding America has mobilized to provide food for communities across the country during the COVID-19 crisis. While many are facing difficulties accessing food, as a city, we have an opportunity to rise up together and support our neighbors in need.

Let’s Talk

After watching Mikel's story, use the questions below to kick-start a great conversation with your family today:

  • What stood out to you about Mikel's story?

  • We all have to ask for help. When was the last time you asked for help? How did it feel to get support from the people around you?

  • Why is it important to show care for others? How can you care for your neighbors in need?

  • Bonus! Bring a smile to a stranger today!

Do Something: Letters to Veterans

Support local veterans. Support veterans like Mikel by showing them some community support. Get creative as a family and make handmade cards to bring cheer to veterans receiving treatment and services at Jesse Brown Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

What would make you smile? Write about your favorite hobbies, sports teams, music, and more! Keep all messages positive and fun. Notes like “Thank you for your service” or “You’re a star” help veterans feel appreciated. Please refrain from using phrases like “get well soon” or religiously affiliated messaging.

Your cards and uplifting messages provide a sense of community support and appreciation for veterans in our Chicago community.

Mail your cards to:
