Reimagine Aging

Get Inspired: What Does Old Look Like?

Reimagine what aging looks like. Sometimes, we make assumptions about people based on their age - and we're not always right! We invite your family to reimagine how we think about older adults and seniors. Check out this video to see how older adults challenge peoples' assumptions about what "old" looks like and redefine aging for younger generations.

Younger generations and older generations have a lot to learn from each other! Now more than ever, it's important to come up with creative ways to combat isolation, not just for seniors, but for people of all ages. When we interact with people who are older or younger than us, we learn from their experiences and build unique relationships that make our communities stronger.

Let’s Talk

After watching the video about disrupting aging, use the questions below to kick-start a great conversation with your family:

  • What stood out to you in the video? Did anything inspire you?

  • What assumptions do you have about aging or older people? Did you learn anything from the people in the video?

  • Do you think it’s important to interact with people of different ages? Why?

  • Bonus! Do people make assumptions about your abilities or what you like to do at your age? Chat with your family members about what we can all do to reduce stereotypes surrounding age.

Do Something: Share Your Stories

Save your story in the National Archives! Do you have a grandparent or a senior neighbor who's life you want to learn more about? Get to know them and share their story with the world through StoryCorps Connect.

StoryCorps is an audio recording organization dedicated to preserving and sharing humanity's stories. Log in with a senior family member, neighbor, or friend and use these great questions to celebrate their story.

Once you have finished recording, complete the details section and your story will be saved in the national archives. Under "community/partner organization" fill in "The Honeycomb Project" and all the stories from our Hive will be saved together!

Community Connections: Chicago Methodist Senior Services

Create sensory boxes for seniors. Our partners Chicago Methodist Senior Services house and care for seniors at three sites in Chicago. From housing, rehabilitation, community services, and memory care programs, CMSS is dedicated to creating holistic care for their residents.

As we age, memory and focus can sometimes become impaired. CMSS is asking for Honeycomb families to create Sensory Boxes. Decorate a small box and fill it with objects that have different textures, shapes, and weights. Different sensory objects can help seniors with Alzheimer's and dementia focus, stay calm, and even help with their memory.

Pick out the objects as a family! What items feel comforting to you? What items have a nice texture? Are they smooth? Are they fluffy? Do they have a nice weight?

Please be sure that all objects in the box are new and clean. To schedule a donation drop off, email Annie Pothour for more details.
