Bergetz Family
“Honeycomb is creating another generation of people who will be in service,” says Carl Bergetz, a longtime supporter of Honeycomb.
Searching for charitable activities that he could do with his kids, Carl’s kids were just 8 and 10 years old when they started participating in Honeycomb projects. “I value volunteer work and more so mission-oriented work,” he says. “I wanted to find experiences for my kids to help others outside of our immediate community.”
Carl appreciates how Honeycomb connects the whole family to a menu of nonprofit opportunities and teaches the dimension of ways to help in communities. “There will always be others that are in more need than ourselves,” he says. “My family wants to be part of the solution.”
Wolfie is now 16 years-old and Romy is now 17 years-old and the family has been involved in projects at Cradles for Crayons, Sew Crafty, the National Veterans Art Museum, UIC Medical District and more.
One of Wolfie’s favorites is Puppy Love Promotes Healing. Carl says “we have two Portuguese water dogs (Ozzie and Ivy) and my kids really enjoyed bringing them and giving companionship to the seniors in the assisted living center.” (This volunteer event even inspired the Bergetz family to get Ozzie and Ivy therapy dog training)!
Romy is in her first year of Honeycomb’s Leadership Corp (HLC) and she’s excited to lead a team and pass on her enthusiasm to new volunteers to Honeycomb. Sew Crafty is one of her favorites, as she loves creating pieces that can be used in a home.
She says “I’ve always loved serving others, and I want to be someone who not only participates in meaningful projects but also helps inspire and organize others to do the same.” Romy especially likes making quilts, baking cookies for families in hospitals and bringing dogs to senior homes. “These projects show how thoughtful gestures can have a lasting impact and I’m proud to help lead and expand efforts like these.”
Outside of Honeycomb, the Bergetz Family keeps busy. Carl is the General Counsel for Rush University System for Health. Romy run tracks and cross country at Fenwick High School and is a singer/songwriter. Wolfe runs as well and wrestles at Fenwick High School and is also a musician and loves math and science. The Bergetz’s enjoy going to concerts and festivals together.
