Make Change Through Art

Art has the power to make tangible change in our communities. Through public art, we can celebrate our identities, raise awareness for social issues, and build community connections.

From creating public art in your neighborhood, to bring a smile to a neighbor’s face, to seeing how self-expression has fueled movements for change, learn more about how your family can make a difference using your creativity with Honeycomb at Home: Art & Culture.

We’re in this together

Mixed Movement

Dance is an artistic expression of the body. Homer Bryant, creative director of the Chicago Multicultural Dance Center, developed a new style of dance he coined "hiplet" as a blend of hip hop and ballet. His hiplet dance troupe gained a lot of buzz in the dance world after their breakout performance on America's Got talent. This refreshing new style of dance is revered as "multicultural, accepting, and genuine".

Art From the Heart

Artistic expression is a way for us to tell stories, to make our voices heard, and to connect with others. Amanda Williams' work questions what colors mean and what we associate certain colors with. By choosing colors that resonate with her cultural identity, Amanda raises awareness and challenges people to think about what community means to them.

Art & Awareness

Art is a platform or us to share our unique lived experiences with the world. Representation in art matters. The Tres Fridas project recreates these classic images to "authenticate the human experience of disability not as one of inspiration, shame, fear, or pity, but as one that is familiar and painted with love, pain, frustration, beauty, happiness, and drive."

Activism Art

Art has the power to transform communities. Theaster Gates creates spaces where connections can be built between neighbors. By addressing issues of disinvestment through art, Theaster is fostering a community where people can work, collaborate, and make positive change in their neighborhood.

Original Art

Art comes in all shapes, sizes, and sounds! Chicago Gay Men's Chorus hosts a space where art and music unifies people. Roberto Lopez notes that the chorus has created a family, making a difference in his well-being and sense of belonging. When we create together, we share a piece of ourselves with the world, building connection and community.

Art Everywhere

Creativity requires that we look at every day objects with a new perspective. When we challenge ourselves to look at art differently, we are also learning how to be more inquisitive, understanding, and empathetic. Reimagining how you look at art can help make the world a better place!

Art in Action

Art has the power to connect communities. Magda Sayeg notes that "we all live in this fast paced, digital world, but we still crave and desire something that's relatable." When we see art that is out of our ordinary, it makes us stop and think - even if it's as simple as yarn wrapped around a stop sign. Public art urges us to be present, to contemplate our ability to create, and to challenge the ways we relate to the world.
