Welcome to

The Honeycomb Project

About Us

Over the past 10 years, The Honeycomb Project has served as Chicago's go-to organization for family volunteering. We provide vital resources and volunteer support to more than 50 Chicago nonprofits.

Our programs address a spectrum of regional challenges including food insecurity, environmental conservation, social justice, and public health. Honeycomb aims to instill empathy, social awareness, and civic action in the youngest of volunteers – building a stronger Chicago for generations to come.

Here you’ll find Honeycomb at Home, our virtual volunteer program designed for the team at SMS Assist. This curriculum features inspiring videos, discussion topics, enriching volunteer activities, and more.

So gather around your kitchen table and let your service adventure begin!

Lesson Plans

Healthy Food & Basic Needs

Community in the Kitchen

We all need support from others to live happy and fruitful lives. Have you been baking at home? The Floured Apron is a job training bakery that helps provide women with professional training and supports them in finding jobs. Baking brings people together, and at Floured Apron, it helps women learn new skills, so they can support themselves and their families.

Environment

People and Planet

Environmental stewardship happens outside AND inside the home. Today, we want you to look at the objects in your home differently. Is that a water bottle or a pot for a plant? A t-shirt or a reusable grocery bag? Check out this lesson about the Rebuilding Exchange, a local nonprofit that's reusing construction waste in creative ways.

Seniors

Senior Celebration

As people age, it is sometimes harder to get out of the house and socialize and make new friends. That's why a group of seniors got together to start a community choir. Together, the seniors are able to leave the house, explore a fun talent, and make new friends.

Education

Have Dreams

We all can create spaces that help each other thrive. We're inviting your family to think about how our educational environments shape the way we view the world. Have Dreams is an organization that provides a space where people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can receive support and empowerment to thrive in and out of the classroom.

Housing

Take Care Together

COVID-19 creates many obstacles for families in need of stable housing. Watch this video about Allia, a 10 year-old from New York City, and learn about how she experiences remote learning while living at a family shelter.

Civic engagement & social Justice

Envision Justice

Restorative justice is a holistic approach to confronting crime. Rather than focusing on punishment, restorative justice systems rely on values such as respect, participation, trust, accountability, and healing. By transforming the spaces and places where we do justice, we can end mass incarceration and build peaceful communities.

Health & Wellness

Healing Hope

Diverse representation in the medical field is a vital part of ensuring patients' voices are heard and youth have the inspiration to follow their dreams. We're asking your family to reflect on all that medical professionals do to keep our communities safe and healthy.

Art & Culture

Activism Art

Art has the power to transform communities. Theaster Gates creates spaces where connections can be built between neighbors. By addressing issues of disinvestment through art, Theaster is fostering a community where people can work, collaborate, and make positive change in their neighborhood.

Family Time

Kindred Connections

Our families are the root of our values, our perspectives, and our voice. Becoming an engaged and caring citizen starts at home. Take some time today to reflect on what makes your family unique. Discover how your family's story shapes your worldview and inspires your everyday actions.

Live Local

When you shop local, you're not only helping the business itself, but all of the people it employs. Supporting local businesses is an important part of strengthening our community, and you can do it from home! Many small businesses provide delivery and curbside pick up to provide you with the services you need and to keep their businesses afloat.

Indigenous People’s Day

Language is an important part of culture, it helps us communicate, gives us words for cultural experiences and phenomena, and allows us express who we are. The strength of community, tradition, and indigenous youth have fought to preserve these languages and to celebrate indigenous heritage.

Pride

A historic march helped pave the way for revolutionary change in the fight for human rights for LGBTQ+ people across the country. Pride is rooted in a fight to live as your true self without fear of oppression. Check out ballerina, Jayna, and her ability to be her true self, follow her dreams, and pave the way for other trans youth.

Family volunteering

Join us out in the field

We host a variety of in-person and socially distanced projects to help Chicago-area families connect with their neighbors and make a difference in their communities. We take care of all the planning and details so you can enjoy your time with loved ones.

Additional safety measures, like masks and social distancing, have been added to all programs. We look forward to working alongside you.
